Bogus Callers Beware

Riverside Housing is investing £1,500 into fitting the device, Identislot, which includes a credit card slot for easy identification of callers, plus an intercom if necessary.  Once fitted vulnerable people do not need to open the door until they are sure the visitor is genuine.

Riverside Housing is working with local police to identify its most vulnerable tenants. Identislot, a non-profit making company, will fit the device and advise tenants on how to set up passwords and identity cards with utility suppliers.

Disturbing reports

Tanya Marsh, Neighbourhood Community Initiatives Officer for Riverside Housing said: “There have been quite a lot of disturbing reports of distraction burglars targeting vulnerable people in St Helens recently, stealing significant amounts of cash from their homes. Bogus callers who force their way in have even attacked some elderly people. We are working with the police to reduce this fear of crime so that residents will feel safer and more secure in their homes.”

Riverside Housing is arranging Identislot for around 40 homes in and around St Helens.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Hesketh from Merseyside Police in St Helens added: “This partnership initiative aims to tackle bogus callers – an issue that concerns our communities.  Residents can keep their door closed while they check the caller’s proof of identity.  It empowers residents to be in control of who they let into their homes. Remember, if in any doubt, keep them out, or contact Merseyside Police on 0151 709 6010.”

Tenants or residents who have been victims of bogus callers or doorstep burglary can contact their Police Community Support Officer to be nominated for Identislot, or if they are a Riverside Housing tenant, contact Tanya Marsh on 0845 111 0000.
