Knockout news for local club
More youngsters in Parr are set to benefit from the discipline and self-control associated with one of Britain’s fastest growing martial arts – thanks to Awards for All lottery funding.
Parr Brook Tenants and Residents Association (TRA) made a successful application for nearly £10,000 to cover the costs of expanding its successful kickboxing club.
The club, which meets at Allanson Street School’s Thompson Centre, currently relies on another group for the use of equipment and clothing. But the new funding will allow organisers to buy their own kit, hire extra coaches – and recruit another 20 members.
The club aims to give youngsters a new outlook – learning a completely new sport that incorporates concentration and discipline and enables them to build self-esteem, respect and teamwork.
Parr Brook Chair Pamela Gravener said: “Securing the grant was fantastic news – and will help us to make a real difference in Parr. The help and support from the Cultural Funding Advisor at St.Helens Council was invaluable.
“This project will help us to reduce criminal and anti-social behaviour in the area - giving youngsters a new focus and bringing them together with TRA members, who tend to be older and who can act as positive role models.”
