Cage football unleashed

Cage football returns this February half term – giving 8-17 year olds the opportunity to develop skills, learn new tricks and socialise with friends.

The free sessions are being staged by The Fire Support Network – a charitable organisation that’s part of the Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service.  The team has a proven track record of attracting young, vulnerable people to positive, diversionary activities.

Funded by the council’s Safer Communities Team as part of a number of initiatives to reduce anti-social behaviour, the sessions are held at night and at times when high levels of anti-social behaviour may occur.

Councillor Susan Murphy, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Safer Communities and Youth said, “We want to provide young people with a safe place to have fun over the February half-term.

“All coaching is provided by fully qualified staff and the portable cage is floodlit. The sessions have proved really popular with our younger residents - both boys and girls!

“Overall in St. Helens there were 1,243 less reports of rowdy anti-social behaviour made to Merseyside Police from April to December 2010 compared with the previous year - a 28 per cent reduction. 

“Initiatives such as this, along with the support of local residents and positive partnership working between local agencies, have contributed towards significant reductions in anti-social behaviour in our borough.”

Cage Football is taking place in Sutton Park, Marina Avenue and Queens Park, Boundary Road from 6-9pm on the following days;

• Tuesday 15 February;
• Wednesday 16 February;
• Thursday 17 February;
• Friday 18 February; and;
• Saturday 19 February
