PurseWatch - Crime Campaign success
A crime campaign in which elderly and vulnerable shoppers were given some tips and tricks to help thwart bag snatchers proved a major success.
In the lead up to Christmas, a Pursewatch campaign launched in St Helens town centre. Figures revealed today show that only two people were the victims of personal theft this Christmas compared with 12 the year before.
As well as practical advice, police Community Support Officers, council officials and representatives from St Helens Chamber handed out special purse bells and purse snatch cables to make things harder for potential offenders.
Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Safer Communities and Youth, Councillor Sue Murphy said: “Crime continues to fall in St. Helens. This safety message is as relevant at any time of the year, not just Christmas.
“By taking a few simple steps – and being alert to the possible risks - we can all do a lot to cut the risk of crime”
Protect yourself – cut the risk of theft by:
• Only carrying what you actually need in your handbag.
• Keeping your bag zipped and close to you.
• Not leaving any items unattended.
• Keeping cash secure and out of sight.
