New group aims to challenge prejudice

A new group is hoping to raise awareness of the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender young people.

The LGBT group is for young people aged 13 to 18 - as well as their peers and friends - and aims to challenge prejudice and exclusion.

Run by St Helens Council's Youth Service, the new group meets every Tuesday between 5.30pm and 7.30pm in a central location.

St Helens Council's Cabinet Member for Children and Young People's Services, Councillor Alison Bacon said: "Often it isn't easy for LGBT young people to find somewhere that's safe and where they feel at ease.

"But the LGBT group is just such a place - and is an ideal venue to meet new friends and get involved in a host of activities, including rock climbing, canoeing, cycling and walking."

The group has plenty of other activities too, including Duke of Edinburgh Awards, a variety of arts and crafts activities and general support - with trained staff always on hand discuss confidential issues.
