Crime caught on camera
Cameras once again zoom in on crime and anti social behaviour
as St.Helens streets continue to be made safer by St.Helens Council
and Merseyside Police.
Camera operators have again teamed police colleagues covering
a spate of town centre incidents.
Staff at the Asda store alerted CCTV staff to a possible
drink/driver. He was refused alcohol at the store and left
driving a black VW Polo.
CCTV staff scanned their cameras looking for the vehicle and
was sighted heading towards the Tesco store. The driver is
seen to get out and urinate onto his vehicle and then drive away.
He was stopped by a Police patrol and arrested on suspicion
of driving with excess alcohol in his body.
Later on August 1 a male assaulted a member of staff at the
Tesco store who then use their St.Helens Chamber Shopwatch radio to
alert CCTV staff to look out for him. He was seen running
across the bridge and in to some bushes. He is monitored in
case he manages to break away while Police patrols are called.
Police found the male hiding in bushes and then assaulted a
Police officer. He was arrested for assault.
On August 3 the Shopwatch radio is used to inform CCTV
staff that a male in a store on the St Helens Retail Park has
committed an offence of shoplifting. Three cameras were used
to scan the area to track him down. Shop staff found
the male hiding near to the store and recovered the goods.
Police arrested him for theft.
Later CCTV operators scanning camera images see a couple
of men on the canal bank fishing near the 'Hotties' . The
operator watches as the two start to make cigarettes.
Believing that they may be using drugs, police were alerted
and they stopped the males and search them. They discover
cannabis and drug related equipment. A seventeen year old was
arrested for possession.
If you are a St Helens resident help to make our town
a better place by completing a quick Community Safety Survey. We
will use the feedback to plan what we do over the coming years.
