Firework fear- remember our four legged friends
St.Helens Council's Dog Welfare Service is reminding dog owners
to take special care of their pets as we enter the firework
season.
Many dogs become very distressed with the loud bags and explosions,
which can go on for several weeks after Bonfire night. If you are
aware your dog becomes upset it's worth making preparations
now.
Ensure you exercise the dog during daylight hours. After 4 pm, only
let the dog in to your own rear garden after checking gates and
fencing are secure.A large cardboard box tipped on its side and
covered with blankets or a quilt makes an excellent 'den'
particularly when placed in an area such as an under stairs
cupboard or behind the settee. Close curtains or blinds and turn on
the television. If the dog is using the under stairs area turn a
radio on and place it in there.
Make sure your dog wears a collar and tag with the owners name
and address inscribed on it. This is still a legal requirement and
if the worst does happen and your dog runs away, it can be reunited
with its owner much quicker and with less stress.
Depending on the level of distress observed, it may be that a visit
to their vet is needed to discuss alternative treatments such as
tranquilisers. These should only be administered on the advice and
guidance of a Vet.
You can contact the council's Dog Welfare and Enforcement
Service on 01744 676338 if you find a lost dog or you can contact
the kennels direct on 01942 671215.
