Cold calling con warning issued
St.Helens Council is warning people to be on their guard about
cold callers that lead people to believe they are from the council
or the valuation office.
Concerned residents have contacted the council saying that they
have been asked for payments up front for services and then a
percentage of any potential refund on re-banding of their
properties. At present it appears they are currently operating in
the Eccleston and Denton's Green area of the town. Some calls have
been from elderly people who are concerned and frightened.
They think the callers are from the council and have been seeking
reassurance. If you have any queries in relation to incorrect
banding of properties, residents can approach the Valuation office,
free of charge, by contacting them on telephone number 03000
504000.If you feel that your property is in the wrong band, and are
entitled to a refund, then you will keep 100% of it and will not
have to pay the fees of a consultant. The council stresses that all
its employees carry identification and that people should always
ask to see proof of identity.
If in any doubt residents should contact the council on 01744
676789 for help and advice.
